Mr. Wagner is in high demand as a trumpet player, clinician, soloist, and teacher. From the beginning he set himself apart from his peers with his beautiful sound, musicality, and strong upper register.
A Michigan native living in Traverse City, he specializes in performing as a musician for musicals including being 1st trumpet on the national tour of Bullets Over Broadway: The Musical and serving as a substitute trumpet for NETWorks Touring. In addition to his vast freelance work Mr. Wagner has performed with the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, Bay Area Big Band, Traverse Symphony Orchestra, Traverse Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, Judy Harrison & Swing Shift, Interlochen Brass Faculty Ensemble, Encore Winds, Round Oak Cornet Band, Edgar Struble & Friends, Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band, Falcone Festival Band, Falcone Festival Orchestra, Blue Lake Faculty Brass Ensemble, Blue Lake Faculty Jazz Septet, Café Cubano, Twin Cities Jazz Orchestra, La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, Al Cobine Big Band, Keith Karns Big Band, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, David N. Mr. Wagner has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Bay County Jazz Festival, Notre Dame Jazz Festival, Elmhurst Jazz Festival, Bloomington Jazz Festival, CMU/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Weekend, MSBOA District 6 Jazz Festival, and the Bay View Music Festival.
Equally at home as a teacher, is the Director of Jazz Bands and teaches Applied Trumpet and Music Appreciation at Northwestern Michigan College. He has served on both the Brass Faculty and Jazz Faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, music faculty Southwestern Michigan College, trumpet instructor for the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, as an adjudicator/clinician for the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association, adjudicator for the Central Michigan University/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Weekend, and presenting independent clinics and masterclasses throughout the US both in person and online. Mr. Wagner has been trumpet Artist In Residence for Mancelona Public Schools, a collaboration with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, funded through grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. He also maintains a private studio teaching trumpet lessons to middle school, high school, and adult students in the Traverse City area.
From 2003 - 2013 he was a band director for the Culver Summer Schools & Camps Naval School program heading the Summer School Jazz Ensemble, Co-Director of the Naval School Marching Band, founder, director, and composer for the Culver Honor Drum Unit, taught brass lessons, and arranged and composed for the various ensembles. He has been honored with a resolution from the Culver Summer School Alumni Association recognizing his accomplishments and dedication to the program, as a musician, and as a teacher. From 2017-2018 he was also the director of the Culver Woodcraft Band.
Many of his students are either graduates or current students at prestigious schools around the world including the Boston Conservatory, Berkley School of Music, Western Michigan University, Michigan State University, University of Cape Town (South Africa), DePauw University, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Mr. Wagner has studied with Dennis Horton, Jay Crouch, Danny Barber, Mike Williams, Robbie Smith, Pat Harbison, David Baker, and Joey Tartell.
He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Central Michigan University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies & Trumpet from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he was the recipient of the Jamey & Sara Aebersold Jazz Studies Fellowship.
Introducing the new concert work "The Lesson of the Lark" - celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of Women's Voting Rights. The piece, which is meant to uplift and unify us during these challenging times, is a multi-movement work composed for narrator, soprano and mezzo-soprano soloists, chorus, and jazz orchestra. The work takes its inspiration from the language of Jazz - including elements of Swing, Blues, Bossa Nova, Gospel, Salsa, and improvisation. Due to restrictions from COVID-19, this piece was recorded individually from remote locations and compiled later as a unified work. Each instrumentalist recorded all parts for their respective sections: 1 player for all 5 saxophone parts, 1 player for all 4 trumpet parts, 1 player for all 4 trombone parts, etc.
